1.Fortaleza Of Maputo

3. The Cathedral of Beira & Ruins of the Fort in Sofala 

A magnificent piece of architectural design having used stones from the ruins of a fort in Sofala (Fort San Gaetano) to build the cathedral itself. Fort San Gaetano was erected right back in the early 16th century (1501) and apparently it was the very first European built structure in the whole of southern Africa. 4. Cathedral Of Our Lady Of The Immaculate Conception

A roman catholic cathedral nestled in downtown Maputo, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception’s foundation stone was laid in 1936 and was completed in 1944. Designed by a railway director and Portuguese civil engineer named Marcial Simões de Freitas e Costa, this religious monument in Mozambique is a simple style building ideal to find peace amidst the busyness of the city.

5. Mercado Municipal

The vibrant hub of colors – everywhere is the first thing that hits you as you enter the Mercado Municipal. 7. Chirrunduo Dam (Limpopo Dam Wall)

Take a drive 26km North to Chirrunduo, you will cross a dam bridge which not only a dam but also one of the famous monuments in Mozambique. The wall of the dam regulates the water of the well known Limpopo River. Visitors exiting their vehicles must exercise caution as there are hippos that inhabit these waters. Farmers have built irrigation canals from off the Limpopo river which helps irrigate their crops whilst locals traditionally fish near the dam wall from off their boats.

8. Maputo Central Railway Station

It might seem an odd choice to visit a railway station on your ‘must-see’ list but the Central Railway Station is no ordinary station. This incredible historic Colonial building in Mozambique, designed by Gustav Eiffel, has recently been beautifully restored in keeping with its historic charm. Old locomotives are on display and there is also a museum at the back. At certain times you can listen to live jazz music but it’s best avoided during commuter times.

9. Cabeça do Velho (“Face of the Old Man”) 

About 4km North East of Chimoio is a popular rock formation/mountain called Mount Bengo. Locals from Chimoio have nicknamed the mountain Cabeça do Velho (“Face of the Old Man”) because if you view Mount Bengo from Chimoio, the mountain portrays a side profile of an old mans face. A combination of shadows and rock protrusions in certain areas, shows a chin, mouth, nose, eye, and forehead, hence the nickname “Face of the Old Man” that was given. this popular monument in Mozambique is approximately 850m long and 550m wide.

10. Mesquita da Baixa

This is the largest and oldest Mosque in Maputo and is a fabulous example of Portuguese and Arabic architectural design with its geometric, stone shapes on the facade standing out in pride. Situated in the old part of town, it was built at the end of the 19th-century and the mosque and its 6 minarets have been recently restored. The beautiful monument in Mozambique, now more than 100 years old, also houses a great little cafe where you can sit and admire the surroundings.

11. Mount Namuli

Gurue is located at the base of Mount Namuli which is Mozambique’s 2nd highest mountain – 2419m above sea level. Visitors can hike up this natural monument in Mozambique. You will have to get permission from the chief of a local tribe who considers the great mountain sacred if you want to climb it. Usually, a donation such as rice, flour, or sorghum will grant you permission. A tribe member will most likely join & guide you up the mountain.

12. Núcleo de Arte

A creative art space, Núcleo de Arte is a combination of permanent, collective, and solo artwork through exhibitions and workshops which can both be viewed and acquired. Part of the exhibits includes artwork made from AK 47 machine guns, landmines, and hand weapons from the Mozambican Civil War – extraordinary sculptures sending the message that wars can be overcome.

13. The Cahora Bassa Dam 

The Cahora Bassa Dam is fed by the iconic Zambezi River and is the 2nd largest hydroelectric dam in Africa and the 5th largest dam in the world! Its capacity is 52,000,000,000, that’s fifty-two thousand million cubic meters of water. The dam started filling in late 1974 and by early 1978 was almost full to capacity, flooding an area of 2,730 square kilometers with an approximate length of 290km, the width of 40km, an average depth of 31 meters and maximum of 157 meters.
