2. Rideau Canal, Ottawa, Ontario

3. Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Banff, Alberta

From its inception, the Fairmont Banff Springs has been a shining example of Canadian hospitality. The General Manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway, William Cornelius Van Horne recognized the tourism potential of the Canadian west and believed that traffic on the Canadian Pacific Railway needed to be increased. He decided to build a succession of lavish luxury resort hotels along the rail line through the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains to accomplish this. Situated at the convergence of the Bow and Spray rivers, Horne commissioned blueprints for this iconic monument in Canada. Construction of the hotel began in 1887. The Fairmont Banff Springs opened to the public in 1888. It quickly became one of the top three mountain resort getaways in North America. From 1900 to the 1920s, several adjustments were made in order to update the hotel and its offerings to keep its longstanding status. But a fire destroyed the original wooden hotel in 1926. Instead of seeing it as a setback, the hotel was rebuilt larger and better, with the current façade it displays today. Even though most people suffered tremendous financial loss in the 1920s due to the Great Depression, the Fairmont Banff Springs survived. People decided to live life to the fullest, continuing to visit and vacation at the hotel despite the uncertain future. World War II was not so easy on the hotel. Travel restrictions were placed on North Americans and Europeans, forcing the hotel to close its doors in 1942. It would not reopen until the war ended in 1945.

4. Fisgard Lighthouse, Colwood, English Columbia

Fisgard Lighthouse is one of the national monuments in Canada. There hasn’t been a keeper here since the light was automated in 1929, but every year many thousands of visitors step inside a real 19th-century lighthouse and capture some of the feelings of ships wrecked and lives saved. In 1860, built by the British when Vancouver Island was not yet part of Canada, and at the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour Fisgard’s red brick house and white tower stood faithfully. When the covering was proposed, a number of locals were against the idea, worrying that it would cause the youth of the community to become sex-crazed deviants by providing them with a place to privately carry out their hormonal fantasies. Some even gave sermons to stop the covering. But the opposition ultimately lost, and the cover went on. Today, there is also a pedestrian walkway that runs along one side of the bridge so that admirers can take a leisurely stroll over the river. The road through the covered span is only one lane, so cars must wait while others pass, but that just means all the more time to appreciate this long, lusty, rustic bridge.
