2. World War I Memorial

As a statue of Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the World War Memorial is set in the same compound. There are some staff who can give one a tour, which is largely just a climb up the inside of the tower. There is no fee, but a tip is expected. There is no lift, so you must take stairs. At the top, one can get a good view of Lilongwe; Capital Hill, Parliament, even Bingu Stadium, and the wilderness and greenery that defines Lilongwe. This national monument in Malawi is located next to Kamuzu Banda statue who was the first President of Malawi is the best viewing point of the city lookout. You could see the Parliament, the Stadium and bits and pieces of the city from high up.

3. St. Michael and All Angels Church

St. Michael and All Angels Church is one of the biggest landmarks and a sacred religious site of the city of Blantyre, in the Republic of Malawi, southeast Africa. Constructed between 1888 and 1891, this religious monument in Malawi has been described by Rev. Alexander Hetherwick as the first permanent Christian Church erected between the Nile and Zambezi rivers. Local men were used as workers with no experience. The most important detail probably falls on the bricks, which were made on-site from local clay and fired in wood-fueled kilns, they were laid up in English bond. There are different arches, domes, and flying buttresses, where the two towers are actually not identical. Today the Church has partnered with the Hiland Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Amazing artistry from someone who had no experience in what he was doing.

4. Chongoni Rock Art

The Chongoni Rock Art is located in the lush and beautiful forested granite hills just north-west of Dedza, in Central Malawi. You will find here numerous natural shelters, houses, and ancient rock paintings that constitute the densest cluster of rock art. There are paintings by Batwa hunter-gatherers who lived in this area from the late Stone Age onwards and also show the tradition of farmer rock art, which is found very rarely. The symbols in the art still have cultural relevance today for the Chewa people and also have strong female associations. For rituals and ceremonies, some of the 127 sites are still active locations. The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and counted in one of the famous monuments in Malawi. The numerous caves and sites are dotted across the Chongoni Forest Reserve which runs alongside the M1 road just to the north-west of Dedza. Not even a reception or visitor centre, there are no visitor facilities at Chongoni, but some of the sites are easy to find and, for others, the necessary guides can be found locally. 5. Livingstonia Mission

Livingstonia Mission is a particularly interesting place to visit and is known as a popular monument in Malawi. In the shadow of the Nyika Plateau and sited high above Lake Malawi at 3000ft, there are views of incredible beauty across the lake to Tanzania. But Livingstonia is also a pretty and fascinating town with a remarkable history. Following in the tradition established in the 1870s, Livingstonia is an outstanding example of the work of the Scottish missionaries in Malawi. The site of the mission is a case of third time lucky. The original Livingstonia site was on the lakeshore at Cape Maclear; it was chosen by Dr Robert Laws, a disciple of David Livingstone. Because of the mosquitoes and malaria this monument in Malawi is shifted to another place and now the new home for the mission was decidedly healthier and it provided opportunities for farming and a ready supply of timber. The mission is to establish a hospital, church, university, school, and a technical training centre. Livingstonia was one of the first places in the country to have electricity, as early as 1905 and has made an immeasurable contribution to education in Malawi.

6. King African Rifles Monument

King African Rifles Monument is an amazing red-brick monument that stands as a memorial to Malawi’s soldiers who fought during WWI and WWII. On the small hill, climb the stairs leading to the monument and learn more about the battalion’s bravery, which was displayed on battlefronts around the world. The lush vegetation and trees in the surrounding park create a soothing ambiance, making this a great place to sit and contemplate in peace. You will see on this popular monument in Malawi the names of hundreds of Malawian soldiers killed in WW I are engraved in the plaques positioned around the monument.

7. Bandawe Mission

Bandawe is a community in Malawi that lives on the west shore of Lake Malawi. Bandawe Mission is one of the earliest Christian missions in Malawi located just a short drive south from Chintheche. After the Livingstonia Mission Bandawe Mission was the second attempt by Dr. Robert Laws, a follower of David Livingstone. Malaria took its toll on the missionaries and forced the survivors to relocate farther north on the Khondowe Plateau as with his first location at Cape Maclear. The church and missionary graves are remnants of this old monument in Malawi. The entry fee of the church is free of cost but leaving a small donation to the congregation is customary.
