7500 km long India’s coastline is home to over 20 million people and is dotted with beautiful beaches. However, these beaches have been polluted by human activities and natural disasters. In order to protect the environment, the Indian government launched a massive campaign called ‘Swachch Sagar, Surakshit Sagar’.

This campaign aims to raise awareness about reducing marine debris and plastic usage. It is part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav’ which marks the completion of 75 years of Independence and the entire country’s coastline will be traversed during this noble drive.

According to the officials, this massive drive is a part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav’ which marks the celebration of 75 years of Independence. 75 volunteers have been assigned to the campaign, and they will be cleaning the beaches along the entire 7500 km of Indian coastline.

The purpose of this cleanup campaign is to raise awareness about the massive amount of plastic waste that has been dumped into the ocean, endangering marine life. According to several studies, the use of plastics accounts for over 50% of ocean litter, endangering human health, economic growth, and marine biodiversity. India saw a massive accumulation of microplastics along its coastline, particularly during the monsoon season. Hence, India took the initiative to minimize this waste on completing 75 years of independence.

The National Disaster Management Authority, the Indian Coast Guard, the Akhil Vidyarthi Parishad, Environment Ministry, Students for Development, and numerous other organizations were involved in the launch of this mission. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, this campaign will result in a significant change in public behavior, which will help conserve the environment. Additionally, the Ministry proposed three main objectives for the campaign: prudent consumption, careful disposal, and at-home separation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

This significant action is also a part of India’s fight against plastic, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a phased campaign to completely ban the use of plastics. Regarding that, on July 1, 2022, India outlawed the use, production, and distribution of plastics nationwide.
