Bhutan, the happiest country in the world, is all geared up to host its first-ever Snowman Race in the country. This will be the first of its kind race hosted by Bhutan in order to raise awareness about rapidly changing climate, global warming, and melting glaciers. It is one of the most difficult ultramarathons, hosted for 5 days between October 13 and October 17, 2022, in Bhutan.

According to reports, 29 endurance athletes from different countries, including the USA, Germany, France, Tanzania, Switzerland, Singapore, Canada, Japan, Australia, and the UK will witness the competition, among whom 9 are Bhutanese runners.

This Bhutan marathon will pass through some of the most challenging trekking routes in Bhutan including the Snowman Trek, Gangkhar Puensum (the world’s highest unclimbed mountain), and the remotely located Lunana area

According to reports, the athletes will compete against one another for more than 203 km over five days at an average altitude of 14,800 feet and a maximum altitude of 17,946 feet.

The same trail has already been completed by several people, and it takes approx. 20-25 days to complete this trail under normal conditions.

Bhutan is a beautiful country with a number of famous destinations for tourists. There are so many famous monuments in Bhutan that welcome thousands of tourists to the country and contribute a lot to the economy. But the climatic challenges were always there for a few decades.

This race is a much-appreciated initiative taken by His Majesty, The King of Bhutan, in order to raise awareness of the climate emergency. The event will draw attention to the true consequences of global warming, especially the most endangered ecosystems on the planet, like those in the high Himalayas.

The marathon event will come to a close with a virtual climate conclave that will take place the day after the race’s final day.

Speaking further about this, Ambassador Kesang Wangdi, Chairperson of the Snowman Race Board, added that Bhutan has always been a global voice for climate change because we are all in grave danger from its effects.

He continued, “This run and everything it represents is a metaphor for the difficulties we still face. The future of our planet and all of its inhabitants will be greatly influenced by what happens in the coming years.

We altogether have to take multiple steps to raise awareness about the protection of our natural environment and this is one of those steps that we all need to take together before we run out of time.
