1. Stone Bridge

Crossing the Vardar River, the Stone Bridge (also known as the Dušan Bridge) is considered the most outstanding symbol of Skopje. This beautiful monument in Macedonia is 214 meters long stone blocks and the construction was erected back in the 15th century, during the time of the rule of Sultan Mehmed II. Situated in the central square covering two banks of the Vardar river, the bridge divides Skopje into two different parts: the “Western European” left bank and the “Oriental” right bank area of the city. 2. Prehistoric Settlement Of Tumba Madzari

3. The City Of Heraclea

4. Fortress Isar 

Located between the rivers Bregalnica and Otinjaon on the west part of Shtip, you can see a rocky hill on which the Fortress Isar is situated. This famous monument in Macedonia is not familiar when exactly the fortress was built but it is known that it dates back to the Middle Ages because it has all characteristics of medieval art. On all four sides of the Isar, churches were built in order to protect the fortress. In 1332 a church dedicated to St. Archangel Michael was built, later in 1337 a church dedicated to St. Vasilie and in 1341 the third church dedicated to St. Nikola was built. Several years later the fourth church was built which today is preserved in its original form. During its existence, the fortress was under several occupations but the Turkish administration left huge marks on it as the Isar was destroyed during that period. Although the fortress was 19 meters high today it remains mostly in ruins with very little preserved parts from the whole construction. Although ruined, the fortress is still visited by locals and travelers who learn a lot about the history of this place and at the same time enjoy splendid views of the city.

5. Millennium Cross

One of the most iconic monuments in Macedonia, the 66-meter tall Millennium Cross is situated at the highest point of Vodno Mountain, near Skopje. Built-in 2002, in commemoration of the 2,000 years of Christianity in Macedonia and throughout the world, the impressive structure stands at 1,066 meters (3,497 feet) above sea level, if you include the mountain and features a stunning view of the surroundings.

6. Ancient Theatre

7. Museum of Macedonia

The Museum of Macedonia is one of the oldest museums and most visited monuments in Macedonia and it is also the biggest since three former museums were joined together, to form a new one. 8. Museum of the City of Skopje

Founded in 1949, this old train station, damaged by a deadly earthquake on July 27th, 1963, now hosts permanent еxhibitions, representing the history of the city. 9. Museum of the Macedonian Struggle

Another historical place in Macedonia to learn about the history of the country is the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Sovereignty and Independence, also known as the Museum of VMRO or the Museum of the Victims of the Communist Regime. Opened officially on the 20th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the country, on September 8th, 2011, this mammoth building, at 6,435 square meters (69,265 square feet), is located in the same area of the other sites of interest.

Moving through time from the beginning of the resistance movement against Ottoman rule, until the declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on September 8th, 1991, the 13 exhibitions here will tell you about you the rich and intense story of the Macedonian fight for liberation, unification and the creation of an independent Macedonian state. 10. The Ruins Of Stobi

Stobi was used to a prosperous city in Macedonia. Most historians say that it was inhabited and developed before that era though it flourished under Roman occupation. Then this important monument in Macedonia was part of Persian rule and became the Roman colony in 69 AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. It continued to thrive until the 6th century. 12. Skopje Aqueduct

The Skopje Aqueduct is one of three of the largest and best-preserved aqueducts and ancient monuments in Macedonia and it’s located in the village of Vizbegovo, 2 kilometers northwest of Skopje. There are many assumptions surrounding the date of its construction and it is said to have been built either during the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, or even the Ottoman Empire, no one can precisely tell how old this structure is. Nonetheless, the aqueduct has, for a long time, brought water to Skopje from the Lavovec Spring, 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) northwest, in the mountains. 13. Marko’s Tower Or Castle
