It is a showcase of Western civilization, with marvels such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Pantheon. Truly it takes days and days to explore the entire  Rome. The city is enormous and it is filled with churches, Roman ruins, and exceptional restaurants that you could spend weeks here and never get bored with. But most people don’t have enough time to spend in Rome. If you have only two days in Rome, you have enough time to visit some of the best spots in the city.
2 Days in Rome, Italy
Day 1
1. Colosseum
First on the list of 2 days in Rome is a visit to the mighty Coliseum. For over 2000 years this has been a landmark location in Rome, and once it was home to the infamous gladiatorial battles that were watched by tens of thousands of Roman citizens.
To be able to visit a place where historical figures like Caesar would have sat to be entertained is quite incredible, and you can almost feel the weight of history carrying by the stones here. It’s a remarkable testament to Roman engineering that much more survives to this day. You must spend at least forty-five minutes to an hour here to soak it all.
We put the Coliseum first on the list of the first day in Rome for a reason – it gets very busy, particularly during the summer months.
The first option to avoid the queues is to buy an online ticket directly from the official Coliseum ticket office website, where you need to specify an entry date and time for your visit.

2. Crypt of the Capuchin Friars
This first step is optional. I’m including it because you almost walk past it on the way from the Colosseum. In several small chapels, the church of Santa Maria Della Concezione dei Cappucchini is the skeletal remains of almost 4,000 Capuchin friars. The bones are arranged in creative patterns. It’s fascinating and definitely an off-the-beaten-path location.

3. Spanish Steps
Expect the Spanish Steps to be crowded. Due to the crowds and a large number of tourists, beware of pickpockets here. From here, it’s a nice view over the Spanish Steps and over the rooftops of Rome.
4. Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is one of Rome’s most popular icons. In Rome, during summers most popular sites were covered with scaffolding.
Legend thinks that if you throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, you will be ensured a visit to Rome. This is such a popular activity that approximately $1.5 million USD was thrown into the fountain in 2016.

5. The Pantheon
The Pantheon is really too old. The Romans were master builders and the Pantheon is one of their most incredible accomplishments.
The construction of the incredible Pantheon was completed in 120 AD. This building survived barbarian raids, wars, earthquakes, and the natural aging of 1900 years of wind, rain, and even snow. For 1300 years, this building was the largest dome in the world, until the completion of St. Peter’s Basilica during the Renaissance. But the best part of the Pantheon is the Oculus ie the circular window at the top of the dome, the only source of light inside the building.
When you first walk inside it, the Pantheon looks like an ancient, bulky, and worn-out building. But from the inside, it looks surprisingly nothing like the exterior. It seems beautiful on the inside due to colorful Italian marble and very unique lighting from the oculus.

6. Piazza Navona
This huge, colorful piazza must be visited. It must be filled with cafes, fountains, and lots of people. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine.

Day 2
Today, spend the morning exploring ancient Roman ruins at the Roman Forum and hop over to the Vatican.
1. The Roman Forum
The Roman Forum is one of the historical centers of Rome. This is ancient Rome, a complex of government buildings, temples, and marketplaces since 2000 years ago. There are many entrances to the Roman Forum. The Palatine Hill entrance on Via di San Gregorio has the shortest line. Enter here, and exit at the gate nearest the Colosseum.
Lunch Break
Spend the middle of the day at lunch.
2. Vatican City
This must be included in your Rome trip. It is the smallest country in the world. This is the place where the Pope calls home. It’s also popular among tourists for its legendary lines to get into the museums and Sistine Chapel. Mid-mornings used to be the busiest time to tour the Vatican. It is less crowded in the afternoon.

3. St. Peter’s Basilica
It is the largest church in the world, also considered to be the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture. It is a separate visit from the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. Like the Vatican Museums, queues can belong to enter the Basilica, however, they are not quite as legendary. It is free to enter this church.
Climb 551 steps to the top of the dome: €6
Cost: Free; €6 – €8 to climb the dome
Hours: April to September 7 am – 7 pm; October to March 7 am – 6:30 pm
The dome opens at 8 am and closes one hour before the Basilica.
Dress Code: For men: no shorts. For women: no bare shoulders and no shorts or skirt shorter than knee length
