Best Time to Visit St. Peter’s Basilica

Attracting millions of visitors every year, the Vatican is a busy place on the earth. As a result, it is always busy, and the Basilica is no exception! Crowds occur during the summer months, school holidays, and special religious occasions such as Christmas and Easter. We recommend that you visit St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican in the off-season, somewhere between late October and mid-September. Not only is it likely to be less crowded, but the ailing summer sun will also disappear for the sake of more pleasant cooler weather, which is more suitable for standing in line and enjoying the atmosphere of St. Peter’s Square. St. Peter’s Basilica is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and closes at 6 p.m. To avoid the crowd, get there either super early (e.g., 7 a.m.) or much later (e.g., 5/6 p.m.) when the tour groups are long gone.
